TOTI CERDA

is a prolific artist whose career went on a fast track since he entered the art scene as a painter twelve years ago. Trained as an illustrator for local paperback novels, Cerda at the age of 38, one day walked into an art gallery with a small watercolor painting, hoping to be an exhibiting painter. He never knew it would be the beginning of an exciting career which would enable him to fully realize his dreams and his full potential as a painter. As if a creative dam had been broken, soon, an endless flow of works came pouring out, creating volumes of critically acclaimed works. Cerda’s figurative style, borne out of his original occupation as an illustrator saw a continuation in his paintings, mostly done in the watercolor medium. When he showed Gallery Genesis his small watercolor painting twelve years ago, the Gallery invited him to participate in its famed annual invitational watercolor competition, "KULAY SA TUBIG", which would pit him against famous contemporary watercolor practitioners.

Then, for three successive years (1997 – 1999) Cerda made artistic history by consistently winning the Top Five which eventually catapulted him to its Hall of Fame category, setting him at par with the famous watercolorists of the country such as Egai Fernandez, Manuel Baldemor, Renato Habulan, Araceli Dans, and Pablo Baens Santos. After "Kulay sa Tubig", Cerda’s confidence as a painter grew as he began winning other painting competitions, this time, on a national level conducted by prestigious institutions such as the National Commission on Culture and the Arts, the Art Association of the Philippines; the GSIS (Government Service Insurance System); and the Philip Morris Art Awards. In 1998, Gallery Genesis hosted Cerda’s first one-man show with more than 50 works. The show became a sell-out! Cerda is predominantly a realist who has worked mainly with watercolor. His painting style indicates his experimentation in handling this difficult medium. His works exhibit various painting techniques as he mixes dry and wet techniques…the drips, dots and strokes of his quick brush, sometimes leaving out spaces to produce desired effects.

His mastery of the medium is expressed in the various natural elements found in his paintings – the ray of light, the sparkle of water, the shadowed pebbles; the luscious foliage and the warm brown skin that seem to breathe with life. His main subjects are of children and the world they perceive and experience. Set against the backdrop of Philippine urban and rural landscapes, Cerda captures various moments in a child’s life where fleeting moments of pure joy and imagination becomes the most captivating experience centered in playfulness. He has created a series of numerous themes revolving around the simple joys of childhood, capturing their liberating innocence in their carefree world.
